Rural Lifestyle

Agriculture enhances the quality of life in the Municipality of Port Hope and Northumberland County, by the products it contributes to the marketplace and through thepreservation ofour rural countryside and a traditional Canadian way of life.
In Ward Two, the rural hinterland that surrounds the urban area of Ward One, scenic rolling farmland offers a treat to the eye and many treats for the taste buds. Pick-your-own and ready-picked farm fresh outlets dot the countryside offering farm produce ranging from sweet corn to strawberries, from apples to maple syrup.
Through initiatives like the Apple Route—which has its western entrance at the hamlet of Welcome in Ward Two—as well as Rural Ramble Farm Tours, agriculture makes a direct contribution to the tourism industry.
But there's more to farming than its undeniable tourism appeal—agriculture is a leading industry in the Municipality of Port Hope and the County of Northumberland. More than 53 percent of the total County land base is in agriculture, with 50 percent of that land classified in the top category of the Canada Land Inventory. That is very significant in a country where only 0.5 per cent of land is Class One.
Major agricultural operations are also a part of the local economy including Curtis Chicks, a chicken hatchery and Ganaraska Grain which handles, cleans, dries, stores and trucks over 26,000 tonnes of grain per year.
