The Role of Economic Development & Tourism
Economic Development
The Economic Development function of the department is responsible for Doing Business in Port Hope including business attraction, retention and expansion. Guided by the Municipality of Port Hope Economic Development Strategy the department's activities include:
- Business attraction through community promotion, marketing, networking and contact development
- Business Retention through wide range ofsupport to assist in fostering sustainability and growth
- Business Expansion through sourcing federal and provincial funding programs and providing liaison with appropriate government agencies
- Communications and public relations with public and private partners, government representatives, industry and business leaders, stakeholders and the media
- Location promotion for business attraction
- Assist with property and building site location and selection
- Maintaining a list of available lands and buildings
- Development of partnerships to promote, support and sustain growth
- Maintain current statistical, demographic and economic data on Port Hope
- Provide assistance with issue resolution, funding sources, government contacts and other business implementation and expansion considerations

Economic Development provides additional services in facilitating relocation inquiries and filming inquiries for the Municipality of Port Hope. The Tourism function of the department develops and implements strategies to attract and support tourism in the Municipality of Port Hope. Conducting an ongoing marketing campaign in a variety of mediums to promote Port Hope as one of Ontario's foremost tourist destinations and produces a full complement of marketing tools including the Port Hope Visitor's Guide, brochures, pamphlets, maps and promotional post cards. The Municipality of Port Hope Tourism Visitors' Information Centre is open five days a week throughout the year from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and on Saturday's from 10 am to 4 pm from April until December as well as Saturday and Sundays during the busy tourist season June through to the end of September.
