Firefighter Duties/How to Apply
Interested in Becoming a Firefighter?
Men or women interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter with the Municipality of Port Hope Fire Department must complete an application form. Forms are available at the Municipal Offices in Port Hope and Canton and also the Fire Department Administrative Office, located at 245 Ontario Street, Port Hope during regular business hours.
Candidate applications will be reviewed by senior management. When openings become available, successful application candidates will be invited to an interview with the Senior Officers. All successful candidates will serve a one year probationary period. During his/her probationary period, the applicant must obtain a "D" Class drivers license with "Z" Endorsement for air brakes, as well as up-to-date first aid and CPR certificates. A current medical report and proof of Hepatitis B vaccination should also be provided.
Firefighter Duties
As a firefighter with the Municipality of Port Hope Fire Department, you will be participating in several areas of Fire Department operations: fire suppression, fire prevention, and public education and awareness.
Active duties will include fire suppression, extrication at motor vehicle accidents, and performing first aid (including CPR and Automated External Defibrillation).
The firefighter is also responsible for duties within the Firehall and related equipment: fire truck and equipment maintenance, and hall/truck bay cleaning and maintenance.
There is regularly scheduled training, specialized training, and meeting nights that the firefighters are also required to attend.
