Home FIRE SAFETY TIPS - The Best Protection for Your Home is Prevention!

  • Develop a Home Fire Escape Plan - draw a floor plan of all the floors of your house / mark 2 exits out of every room / choose a meeting place that everyone will remember / do a head count at your meeting place to ensure everyone is out / practice your home fire escape plan so that all members of the household are familiar with it (once every three months) / call 911 from a neighbours home.
  • Working smoke alarms are the law! As of March 1, 2006, the new provincial regulation states that you must have one working smoke alarm on every level of your home - including the basement and outside of sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms once a month to ensure operation. If you sleep with your bedroom door closed, a smoke alarm in the bedroom would be a positive addition to your home fire safety. Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years. REMEMBER: Change your clocks—Change your batteries.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors adjacent to bedrooms. Replace your CO detector every 5 years.
  • Check all electrical cords for deterioration; plugs get frayed and loose. Don't overload extension cords, instead, use a power bar with surge protector.
  • Schedule regular inspections and cleaning of your furnaces, fireplaces, chimneys, clothes dryers, etc.
  • Never leave candles burning unattended. When you go out—blow out!
  • Unplug appliances when not in use (toaster, coffee makers, etc.).
  • Never leave cooking unattended - follow proper safe cooking procedures Ensure all smoking materials are completely extinguished.
  • If there is a fire, get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning building.
  • Keep all lighters and matches out of the reach of children.
