Burning By-Law/Open Air Burning

Port Hope fire DepartmentThe Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 - O. Reg. 388/97 (2.6.3.4. Open Air Burning) states:

"Open air burning shall not be permitted unless approved , or unless such burning consists of a small, confined fire, supervised at all times, and used to cook food on a grill or a barbecue."

The Municipality of Port Hope Fire Department does offer "Burn Permits" to those who live in Ward 2. Applications for Burn Permits are available at the Canton Municipal Office during business hours. A site visit may be required prior to receiving approval for your permit.

There is no 'open air burning' permitted in the urban area (without the permission of the Fire Chief or his designate).

Inquiries regarding Burn Permits and open air burning should be directed to Rob Collins, Director of Fire and Emergency Services or Jim Wheeler, Deputy Fire Chief, at (905) 885-5323.
