The Role of the Public Works Department
The Public Works departmentprovides engineering advice and guidance to Municipal Council, Municipal Staff, local property owners, residents of the Municipality of Port Hope and property developers on the use of land within the Municipality of Port Hope. The Public Works Division of the Municipality of Port Hope is responsible for:
Roads and Sewers are maintained by the Municipality with respect to roads, sidewalks, bridges and culverts, storm and sanitary sewers, ditches, traffic signals, and streetlights. The Public Works department maintains all sewers within the municipal right-of-way. It is the property owner's responsibility to maintain sewers on private property unless the municipality has an easement for a public sewer on private property.
Snowplowing and Snow Removal is the responsibility of the Roads/Sewers Departmentduring the winter months. Roads are cleared on a priority basis—arterial roads and bus routes receive the highest priority followed by collector roads down to local residential streets. Waste Management in the Municipality of Port Hope is the responsibility of the County of Northumberland. Questions about curbside garbage collection, bag tags, recycling, and hazardous waste should be directed to the County of Northumberland Waste Hotline at 1-866-293-8379.
Engineering and Environmental Services is responsible for all transportation, transit, and traffic related issues, the review of all residential, commercial and industrial applications, the administration of all capital works projects (including the reconstruction of municipal services and the municipal road resurfacing program), the water/wastewater treatment plants, and establishing design and construction engineering standards.
