Public Attitude Research
The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) has commissioned periodic public attitude research to monitor public awareness and to identify issues and concerns. The sixth annual telephone survey was carried out among the general public in Wards 1 and 2 of Port Hope during October - November 2007. The Key Findings (Executive Summary) were:
- Over 90% of residents are satisfied with living in their community, with 72% very satisfied.
- Residents are confident (75%) that the waste can be safely managed for the long term.
- Awareness of the Port Hope Area Initiative (86%) and the Port Hope Project (73%) is high. Most people (78%) know something about the presence of low level radioactive waste in Port Hope. However, most (72%) "never" or "not very often" think about it.
- Radioactive waste is a top issue in the community while 37% say radioactive waste has the most negative effect on their community image. The issue of most concern with the Project is "transporting the waste".
- 65% support the recommendations of the Municipality's advisory committee that both passive and active recreational uses should be provided at the storage site.
- The survey notes that although there is strong agreement on the need for the Property Value Protection Program only half of the residents are aware of the PVP Program.
