Northumberland Big Sisters

Northumberland Big Sisters is a non-profit organization funded in large part by the United Way and our "Second Helpings" Thrift shops in Port Hope, Colborne and Brighton. Northumberland Big Sisters has been active in our community for 25 years, offering unique mentoring services to girls and young women ages 6-18 years, who are having a difficult time meeting the challenges of growing up. There are lots of things about Big Sisters that make us unique: one-on-one friendships between young girls and caring women supported by a committed organization that expands its services to work effectively with girls in our community. We also offer unique volunteer development opportunities, great group activities, Teen Esteem Program and summer camping for all the girls in our program. Most important rule is to have FUN!

Northumberland Services for Women

The mission of Northumberland Services for Women (NSW) is to provide safety, support, education and an inclusive environment for the empowerment of women and their children and to advocate against violence and oppression in society. NSW offers temporary, safe and secure shelter for women and their children who are seeking refuge from an abusive relationship. NSW recognizes that abuse can take many forms, including, but not limited to verbal, emotional and physical abuse.

NSW also offers Community Services in a variety of locations throughout Northumberland County. This includes group counselling (a number of different types of groups are available), as well as individual counselling for women and children who have been impacted by family violence. Counsellors also provide public education, advocacy, and referrals to other community services and resources.

Another program offered within the Community Services program is our Transitional Housing and Support Program. The focus of this program is in assisting women and their children who are victims of family violence to establish stable, violence free lives in the community. The Transitional Housing Support Counsellor will assist women in identifying and accessing the supports they require and assist women to find and maintain housing. She will also coordinate services with other community support agencies, provide public education, and advocate for women.

Northumberland Youth Advisory Council

The Northumberland Youth Advisory Council was established to empower and connect young people as an advisory voice to government, while also engaging and retaining youth as part of a sustainable youth strategy for our county. Furthermore, we are creating an information forum that actively communicates and promotes opportunities for youth in business, politics and culture. All the decisions made by the NYAC are made by youth between the ages of 14 to 24. The NYAC is the first county wide youth driven organization in Northumberland County's history. This council evolved from the hard work of many local organizations and individuals throughout our county.
