Project Location
The Port Hope Project involves the construction of a long term waste management facility (LTWMF) between Baulch and Brand roads south of Highway 401 in Port Hope, the remediation of various contaminated sites within the Municipality including the harbour and specified historic wastes from the Cameco site; the transfer by truck of the contaminated material to the new facility along specified transportation routes; integration of wastes at the existing Welcome waste management facility; and the maintenance and monitoring of the facility for several hundred years. Conceptual Design of Above-ground Mound Facility.
An estimated 1.4 million cubic metres (m3) of waste, primarily contaminated soils will be placed in the LTWMF originating from the following sources within the Municipality:
- Approximately 620,000 m3 of LLRW from the existing Welcome Waste Management Facility;
- Approximately 572,000 m3 of LLRW and commingled waste from various remediation sites in the Municipality;
- Approximately 51,250 m3 of waste from contaminated industrial sites; and,
- 150,000 m3 of Cameco-owned pre-1988 waste and waste from demolished buildings.
The LTWMF will have a containment capacity of 1.9 m3 to allow for a contingency should additional waste above cleanup criteria be found. The LTWMF will consist of an above-ground engineered containment mound with a low-permeability base liner and final cover. The site will be accessed by a project access road extending west from Toronto Road. The Facility will be constructed and the contaminated soils from the various remediation sites would be placed in the facility during the construction phase, currently estimated to be 5 to 7 years duration, beginning in 2011.
