You need a permit to put in an in ground or above ground pool on your property in the Municipality of Port Hope.

Before you start

Contact the Planning Department before you apply for a building permit in order to ensure that your proposed building or renovation meets the necessary design guides and requirements for your property.

Application

Please complete the Building Permit Application online or complete a printed version and submit it to:

Fee

It costs $125 to apply for a pool permit.

  • Name and address
  • Construction costs
  • Address for the permit location
  • Detailed description of the project

Building Permit Application 

Pool enclosures

You need to put a fence around all above ground and in ground pools and hot tubs in the Municipality of Port Hope. All requirements are outlined in the Swimming Pool By-law. For a copy of the Swimming Pool By-law please contact us by phone at 905-885-2431 or email.

Fence construction details

All fences must meet these building requirements:

  • It must be at least 1.5 m in height
  • It must be located at least 1.2 m from the edge of the pool or hot tub
  • It cannot have any horizontal or diagonal braces that could make it easier to climb
  • It cannot have any barbed wire or electric wires that could shoot an electric current through the fence

Book an inspection
