Friday, May 2, 2025 - Port Hope, ON
Last night, the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope set the stage for a meaningful celebration as the Municipality hosted its 37th Civic Awards ceremony, honouring the commitment and achievements of outstanding local residents.
“Port Hope thrives because of the passion and commitment of its people. The Civic Awards are a celebration of those who go above and beyond to strengthen our community,” notes Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “It’s a privilege to join my fellow Council members in acknowledging the outstanding people who make Port Hope such a vibrant and caring place to call home.”
The awards, determined through nominations, recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the community in various fields such as Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Athletics, Community Services, Inspiration, and Philanthropy, along with special categories for Special Commendation, Outstanding Youth and Outstanding Citizen.
This year, Morgan Kroeger received the Outstanding Youth Award, and William F. Hubbs was honoured with the Outstanding Citizen Award, both exemplifying a commitment to volunteerism that inspires the entire community. Lou Pamenter received the Special Commendation award for her legacy of literature and goodwill in Port Hope.
It was a packed house, with awards distributed across nine categories. The evening also featured performances by local talents including the Port Hope Piper (Brodrick Ewing), Kate Shur, Christine Rabey, Ontario Street Comedy Troope and the Oakridge Mixed Chorus, with York Bell Smith serving as the master of ceremonies.
Post-ceremony, attendees enjoyed refreshments in the Capitol Theatre lobby, from a selection of local businesses that included Sunnyside Diner, French Affair, The Main, Jim’s Pizza and Pasta, Reginos, Bliss Bakeshop, and The Thirsty Goose.
The Civic Awards Advisory Committee, consisting of Council and community members, oversees the annual recognition program. Members for this year include Dave Kroeger, Leah Wall, Kim Jaye, Kendra Simmons, Siobhan Kloosterhof, Carolyn Scatterty, Councillor Adam Pearson, Recording Secretary Emma McKerroll, and Staff Representative Jeannie Maidens.
The committee extends its gratitude to all who submitted nominations. The nomination process for the next Civic Awards will open in December. For more details, visit porthope.ca/civic-awards.
