At the Municipality of Port Hope, our By-law Enforcement Officers work to uphold community standards by ensuring that residents follow all By-laws. This allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy a clean, safe and shared community.

By-law Enforcement is responsible for:

  • Investigating By-law complaints
  • Enforcing By-law regulations and standards
  • Educating the public on relevant standards
  • Achieving resolutions to By-law infractions
Make a By-law complaint

You can make a complaint online or in person. Our office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. located at 245 Ontario Street, Port Hope.

You can make a property standards complaint if you see a property in violation of the Municipal Property Standards By-law (see frequently requested by-laws below).

Parking infractions

Review the Municipality of Port Hope's parking regulations and learn how to pay a parking ticket. Our Municipal Enforcement Officers will issue parking infractions to vehicles that do not abide by all parking regulations.

Frequently asked By-law Questions

How many dogs can I own? A maximum of 3 dogs may be owned and kept at one time. Refer to our Animal Control By-law 60-2022 for more information. 
Where can I hunt within the Municipality? Refer to our Discharge of Firearms By-law 56-2016 which includes maps with highlighted areas that prohibit firearm use. For more details about hunting licences, rules and seasons see the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry website.
How long can I park on the street for? Street parking is allowed for up to 72 hours. After 72 hours, vehicles may be towed at the discretion of the Municipality. For more information on parking refer to our Consolidated Traffic and Parking By-law 39-2008. For parking rates and places to park visit our parking webpage. 
Can I camp or live in my trailer? Camping or living in your trailer is prohibited in all areas of town except for land zoned as “OSR.” Visit our zoning webpage for more information on the zoning By-law. 
Can I have an open fire in town? Open fires are not permitted in the urban area. Rural properties must obtain a burn permit. Refer to our Burn By-law 14-2012 for more information, or visit the burn permit webpage. 
Am I responsible for clearing my sidewalk after a snowstorm? Yes, the sidewalk must be cleared no later than 48 hours after the storm begins or 7:00 p.m. on the second day after the storm began. For more information visit our snow plowing and snow removal webpage or refer to our Consolidated Traffic and Parking By-law 39-2008.
Am I allowed to park overnight in the winter on roads? Overnight parking is permitted in the winter only on roads that are not considered “snow routes”. Snow route signs will be posted. For more information on parking refer to our Consolidated Traffic and Parking by-law 39-2008. Visit our snow plow and snow removal webpage for more details. 
Am I allowed to idle my car? Idling is permitted for no more 3 minutes when the temperatures are between 0-30 degrees. For more information refer to our Consolidated Traffic and Parking by-law 39-2008.
