Notice of Waterfront Trail Closure - December 15 to 24
Work will be taking place near the A.K. Sculthorpe Woodland Marsh and the barrier beach along portions of Lake Ontario beginning December 15 until December 24. The barrier beach helps protect the Marsh, but it is part of a naturally eroding shoreline. This erosion speeds up during periods of extreme lake levels, creating risks for this sensitive area.
To help stabilize the shoreline, we are installing nature-based protection features called boulder headlands and adding fresh cobblestone material. These measures will help keep the shoreline healthy and protect important natural features, including trees and plants in the A.K. Sculthorpe Woodland Marsh, a provincially significant wetland.
This work is based on a coastal engineering assessment and focuses on priority areas. The goal is to improve the barrier beach’s resilience during high lake levels and storms, while providing natural nourishment to the area. This project is supported by the Province of Ontario through the Wetlands Conservation Program.
Closures and Access Changes
To complete this work safely, a laydown area will be set up near Lake Street and the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The following closures will be in place:
- Gage Creek access driveway and parking lot
- Waterfront Trail from Gage Creek west to the trail connection at the A.K. Sculthorpe Woodland Marsh parking lot (formerly Chemetron Lagoon)
The A.K. Sculthorpe Woodland Marsh parking lot will remain open, and trail access to the west along Lake Street will continue to be available.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to protect and enhance this important natural area.
