Under the Municipality's established rotation system for the Deputy Mayor role, Claire Holloway Wadhwani has assumed her turn as Deputy Mayor of Port Hope for 2024.
"I am thrilled to rotate into the Deputy Mayor role for 2024 and to be available to step up as needed to fill in for Mayor Olena,” states Deputy Mayor Holloway Wadhwani. “Mostly, as a member of Council, I look forward to continuing to engage with neighbours and work towards greater transparency in our Municipal decision-making as we work together to ensure Port Hope is a great place for us all to live, work, and play!"
In 2023, coinciding with the current Council term, a new system was introduced for the Deputy Mayor role, involving a rotation schedule for those Members of Council interested in participating. The rotation for 2024 includes Council members Attridge, Holloway Wadhwani, Mink, and Pearson. The rotating appointments allows eligible councillors the opportunity to contribute further to the leadership of the community.
“The Municipality looks forward to the continued dedication and contributions of our newly assigned Deputy Mayor as we work together to address the needs and aspirations of our residents,” states Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “I would like to thank Councillor Todd Attridge for fulfilling his role as Deputy Mayor in 2023 and his ongoing dedication to this Council and to Port Hope.”
The Deputy Mayor is not a legislated role within the Municipal Act, but many municipalities across Ontario and Canada elect or appoint the position as part of their Council composition. The Deputy Mayor’s role is primarily to act as Mayor when the Mayor is absent or if the position of Mayor is vacant.
