For Immediate Release
Friday, March 13, 2026 - Port Hope, ON
The Municipality of Port Hope and the Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny Committee proudly announce the annual call for participants for this year’s event, set for Saturday, April 11, 2026.
“This annual event continues to embody the resilience and camaraderie that define our Port Hope community,” says Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “Each year, this beloved tradition brings our community together to honour our history and also welcomes visitors to experience our vibrant town. My sincere thanks to the emergency services, staff, and volunteers whose dedication ensures a safe and memorable weekend for everyone.”
The Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny Race is a signature celebration that honours the community coming together after the devastating flood of 1980. Participants are challenged in a rigorous 10-kilometre race down the mighty Ganaraska River on canoes, kayaks and ‘crazy crafts’. At the finish line, “Fannyville”, the outdoor event village, is set up to host various food, drink and merchant vendors, entertainment, children’s activities, and live commentary of the race results, culminating in an award presentation for the race finalists.
“After a long winter, there’s nothing better than welcoming everyone back to Fannyville,” says Barrileigh Price, Operational Lead for Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny. “This event has become a true rite of spring in Port Hope. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or trying the race for the first time, it’s a chance to test your endurance, creativity, and Ganny spirit. And if racing isn’t your thing, come down to Fannyville to cheer everyone on. One of my favourite parts of the day is seeing friends, neighbours, and visitors coming together to celebrate and enjoy the energy of the community.”
Participant registration is now open on the Race website: floatyourfanny.ca. All participants are reminded to carefully review registration information to prepare accordingly for the smooth launch of your vessel and safe travels on the fast and chilly waters of the Ganaraska. The event plan was reviewed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, to ensure the Municipality remains in compliance with all policies and procedures to support the safety and sustainability of the fish and wildlife habitats in the river.
If you’re planning to join the festivities in Fannyville and cheer on participants, here are a few reminders to help ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone. While we know many visitors love to bring their dogs, we kindly encourage leaving four‑legged companions at home, as the event draws large crowds and can become quite congested. To keep things fun and family‑friendly, please note that water balloons are not permitted. Finally, please remember that open alcohol is strictly prohibited. Thank you for helping us keep the celebration enjoyable for all.
As usual, Municipality of Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services, in collaboration with multiple community emergency service partners are heavily involved in the safety planning and will be on-site during the event. Participants and spectators must follow protocols and remain mindful and respectful of each other along the riverbank. The health and safety of the community remain top priority for event organizers and the Municipality.
While the event is scheduled for April 11, river conditions will be monitored and considered leading up to the Race. If deemed necessary, the race date may be rescheduled for April 18, 2026.
