Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between Port Hope and Ontario Power Generation
Today, the Municipality of Port Hope signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to advance collaboration related to the exploration of potential new nuclear generation at the Wesleyville site in Port Hope.
Through this agreement, the Municipality and OPG will work together to advance planning activities, strengthen community engagement, support sustainable development and economic growth, and overall community well‑being as the proposed project progresses through the regulatory and assessment processes.
As part of this collaboration, OPG is providing $4.5 million in early growth‑readiness funding to ensure the Municipality has the necessary resources and capacity to fully engage in the multi‑year Impact Assessment process and early planning work for the proposed facility.
Mayor Olena Hankivsky highlighted the importance of this partnership for Port Hope’s long‑term planning and readiness:
“The MOU between the Municipality and OPG represents the kind of forward‑looking collaboration our community needs to prepare for future growth as we continue to explore the development of clean energy generation in Port Hope. By strengthening partnerships, enhancing community engagement, and supporting sustainable development, we are laying the groundwork for long‑term economic growth and community well‑being. This agreement ensures we are ready to meet the opportunities ahead. We’re proud to take this step together to build a resilient, prosperous future for our community.”
