Parking By-law Review Engagement
We are proposing changes to our current parking regulation (Traffic and Parking By-law 39-2008) in response to ongoing operational challenges and community concerns related to on-street parking during winter conditions. Each winter, we receive many complaints, as snowplows often have to drive around parked vehicles during snow clearing operations. This often leads to:
- Large piles of snow being pushed into driveways and sometimes against homes or windows
- Accessibility challenges for seniors and people with limited mobility
- Narrow streets that make snowplowing unsafe and can cause plowing on that street to be delayed or missed altogether
- Delays for emergency vehicles trying to navigate the streets
- Overall safety concerns for pedestrians and drivers
Updating the rules surrounding street parking in the new Draft Parking By-law is one of the main tools we plan to use to fix these problems.
What changes are being proposed?
- No overnight street parking in winter - From December 1 to March 31, you would not be allowed to park on any municipal street from 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
- 12-hour limit on street parking - Cars would generally be allowed to park on the street for up to 12 hours, unless signs say otherwise.
- Free resident parking permit - To keep things fair, there will be free resident parking permits for those who do not have driveways.
Have your say!
