Port Hope Council Adopts Community Climate Action Plan
For Immediate Release
Thursday, June 19, 2025 – Port Hope, ON
At their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 17, Municipality of Port Hope Council adopted the Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP), a strategic and community-driven roadmap designed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and build a more resilient, sustainable future for all residents.
Developed with extensive community input, including pivotal advocacy and guidance from the Port Hope Environmental Advisory Committee, and grounded in best practices in climate mitigation, the CCAP outlines 17 targeted strategies across key sectors: Residential, Commercial and Institutional Buildings, Transportation, Community Design and Land-Use Planning, Agriculture and Local Food Systems, Environmental Stewardship, and Waste and Water.
“Port Hope’s Community Climate Action Plan is a bold and necessary step to ensure our community remains a safe, welcoming, and vibrant place to live, work, and play for generations to come,” said Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “The development of this plan is a culmination of community engagement and inspiration, and we will look to the community to continue leading the way—through collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility—as we turn this vision into meaningful action.”
A climate action plan serves as a strategic framework for measuring, planning, and reducing GHG emissions. Port Hope’s CCAP includes a comprehensive emissions inventory, reduction targets, and a prioritized list of actions that, if implemented, will not only reduce emissions but also deliver cost savings and a range of co-benefits for the community.
The CCAP recognizes that human activity—particularly the burning of fossil fuels—is the primary driver of global temperature rise. Although Port Hope has not yet experienced the severe climate impacts seen in other parts of Canada and the world, the municipality is taking proactive steps to prevent and prepare for future challenges.
Key to the plan’s success will be broad community involvement, strong governance, and a robust implementation and monitoring framework.
"Bringing this plan to the finish line has been a long time coming, and I’m thrilled that it has received Council’s approval," said Port Hope Councillor and Environmental Advisory Committee Chair Claire Holloway Wadhwani. "The Committee is energized and committed to taking a leadership role in the plan's implementation by working collaboratively with the community, staff, and Council to bring it to life."
