This weekly publication will deliver updates from the Mayor's office, highlight the community events and activities attended by Council, identify the proclamations and declarations signed by the Mayor, and share important municipal business taking place this week.

Meet your new Council
On November 15, 2022, Council for the Municipality of Port Hope was sworn in for the 2022 – 2026 term of office. Newly elected councillors took the Declaration of Office prior to assuming their seat on Council.

Advancing municipal business
The following items are highlights from our recent Council and Committee of the Whole Meetings:
- Council authorized a By-law to appoint Members of Council as Chairs/Portfolio Leads of the Standing Committees outlined in the Procedural By-law.
- Mayor Hankivsky prepared a letter sent to Premier Doug Ford expressing deep concern regarding Bill 23 - More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022.
- Staff presented a report identifying options for rotating appointments to the Deputy Mayor position and any subsequent procedural by-law changes necessary. This item was deferred to the next Council Meeting on January 10, 2023.
- Council directed staff to undertake a comprehensive review of the Procedural By-law incorporating feedback from members of Council and public engagement.
- The Protective Services Committee supported, in principle, the location for the proposed replacement of Fire Station 2 at 55 Fox Road and directed staff to undertake community engagement efforts related to this new location. The Committee also directed that, following community engagement, staff provide a report and recommendations to Council regarding the replacement of Fire Station 2.

Declarations, proclamations, and flag raising
The following declarations were adopted by Council this week:
- Council declared a climate emergency in the Municipality of Port Hope for the purposes of naming, framing, and deepening our commitment to protecting our economy, our eco systems, and our community from climate change.
- Council adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada pledging to use it as the framework for Indigenous reconciliation.

Council around town
Over the past month, Members of Council have been busy attending the following announcements and events across the Municipality:
- Waterfront & Riverwalk Open House
- Seniors Information and Active Living Fair, which included a funding announcement by the Honourable Raymond Cho, Ontario's Minister of Seniors and Accessibility
- The Festival of Trees & Lights ribbon cutting at the Capitol Theatre
- The Port Hope Santa Claus Parade
- The Athletic Wall of Honour unveiling at the Jack Burger Sports Complex

- The Resilient Communities funding announcement with MPP David Piccini
Mayor Hankivsky attended the Inaugural County Council meeting and election of the 2023 Warden and Deputy Warden of Northumberland County. As County Councillor, Mayor Hankivsky was appointed Community Health Committee Chair and is also a member of the Social Services Standing Committee.
In addition, Mayor Hankivsky was also appointed to the HKPR Board of Health.
Finally, the Mayor is planning some visits to unsuspecting folks around town this holiday. She will be delivering thank you cards to members of our community who help make Port Hope sparkle. Stay tuned for our next edition where we’ll include more details!
