You need to apply for a special event sign permit if you would like to put up temporary signs for a special event in the Municipality of Port Hope.

Application

Please complete the Special Events Sign Application online or complete a printed version and drop it off to the Municipal Development Team Office at:

5 Mill St. S
Port Hope, ON L1A 2S6

We are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Apply for a Special Event Sign

Submission details

You will need to include the following information with your application:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Business name (if applicable)
  • Location of the signs
  • Date range that the signs will be posted 

No sign shall be posted more than 21 days in advance of an event and all signs must be removed within 48 hours after the event ends.

Fees

There is no fee to apply for a special event sign permit.

What happens if I put up a sign without notifying the Municipality?

If you don't notify the Municipality before erecting a special event sign, we may impound the sign and you may need to pay a reclaiming fee. 

Temporary Tents

Please be advised that special events are not permitted on residential properties in the Urban area of Port Hope. For more information, please contact the Planning Division.

Tents installed within the Municipality of Port Hope which exceed 10m² (108 ft2) in area require a Building Permit regardless of the length of time the tent will be installed. 

Application

Temporary tents require a standard Application for a Permit to Construct or Demolish and additional requirements as indicated below. Submit your application by email, or complete a printed version and drop it off to the Municipal Development Team Office at:

Submission details

The following documentation must be submitted with the tent permit application:

  • A site plan showing the proposed location of tent(s);
  • A floor plan of the tent showing the location of exits, tent posts, seating areas and proximity to other buildings;
  • Verification of flame retardant materials for the tent; and
  • Fire extinguishers are required

 

If the tent is to be on public property, the following is also required:

  • A Fire Safety Plan which has been reviewed and approved by the Chief Fire Official, submitted to Fire and Emergency Services
  • All requirements of Section 2.8 and 2.9 of the Ontario Fire Code are applicable. (For Ontario Fire Code, see page here: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/070213)

What happens if I put up a tent without notifying the Municipality?

Building without a permit can result in fines and penalties as set out in the Building Code Act.
