Recently, Hydro One announced that the Municipality of Port Hope is one of the 28 Indigenous communities, charitable organizations and municipalities to receive a $25,000 grant from the Energizing Life Community Fund.
Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services is honoured to receive this funding, which will be used to support the development of our Community Wildland Fire Protection Plan (CWFPP).
“We are proud to be selected as a recipient of Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund,” stated Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “This grant allows us to take proactive steps to protect our residents, homes, and natural landscapes from the growing risk of wildfires. On behalf of Council, I thank Hydro One for their partnership and commitment to supporting community safety and resilience in Port Hope.”
This Community Wildland Fire Protection Plan will help identify local wildfire risks, strengthen emergency preparedness, and implement strategies to protect people, property, and natural areas – including one of our most valuable natural resources, the Ganaraska Forest. It will serve as both a guide for prevention and a framework for coordinated response in the event of a wildfire. With the recent increase in wildfires in neighbouring communities, having a comprehensive CWFPP in place is more important than ever to safeguard Port Hope.
"We are grateful to Hydro One for their generous support,” noted Jason Williams, Fire Chief and Director of Protective Services for the Municipality of Port Hope. “This investment will provide us with the tools and strategies needed to better understand local wildfire risks, enhance emergency preparedness, and coordinate response efforts. It will also guide prevention and education initiatives to help build long-term community resilience.”
“It’s inspiring to see the Municipality of Port Hope improve people’s well-being by fostering meaningful connections and providing essential resources," said Bronwen Evans, Vice President, Sustainability, Communications and Marketing, Hydro One. “Our 2025 recipients are powerful agents of local change, and we are excited to partner with them through our Energizing Life Community Fund. Congratulations to the Municipality of Port Hope and thank you for your dedication to building a better and brighter future.”
