For Immediate Release
Tuesday, June 30, 2026 – Port Hope ON
The Municipality of Port Hope is excited to announce the purchase of 39 Pine Street, the heritage-designated building formerly known as Central Public School. This acquisition represents an important step in addressing the Municipality’s need for additional office space while preserving a cherished community landmark.
Constructed in 1912, the 28,000-square-foot building is a well-recognized and significant part of Port Hope’s architectural and cultural landscape. Acquired for $3.25 million, the property reflects a strategic investment in both infrastructure and heritage preservation, reinforcing the Municipality’s commitment to protecting historic assets while giving them renewed purpose.
In recent years, the Municipality has faced critical space constraints and functional limitations across its facilities, impacting operational efficiency and service delivery. Following a review of available options, 39 Pine Street was identified as a practical and strategic solution, offering quality space in a central location while avoiding the need for new construction.
“This investment allows us to both honour our past and plan responsibly for our future,” said Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “By repurposing this landmark building, we are ‘walking the talk’ when it comes to heritage preservation and making thoughtful use of existing community assets, while finding a practical solution to a real and growing challenge.”
In the near term, targeted accessibility upgrades will be completed to ensure the building meets current standards and supports a modern workforce. Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, staff from select departments will be relocated to the site. This transition will help relieve pressure on other municipal buildings and support more efficient service delivery for residents and businesses.
This purchase follows thorough due diligence and analysis. A comprehensive building condition assessment confirmed the structure is in good condition, supported by significant capital improvements made by the previous owner. Staff also conducted a detailed lifecycle review, including projected maintenance, required remediation, and long-term budget considerations, ensuring the investment is responsible and sustainable.
A staff report outlining the purchase details will be presented at a future Council meeting. Additional updates, including occupancy timelines, potential future uses, revenue and grant opportunities, and associated costs will be shared as the project progresses.
This investment establishes a clear path forward - strengthening current operations while ensuring the Municipality is well positioned to meet the evolving needs of the community for years to come.
