Temporary Road Closure – Walton Street (Mill to Pine Street)
To complete the final stage of the Walton Street Reconstruction Project, crews will be working in the downtown core to safely and efficiently complete the last required work, including the installation of the final lift of asphalt.
A full road closure for vehicles on Walton Street (from Pine Street to Mill Street) is tentatively scheduled from September 22 to October 3. Sidewalks will remain open during the road closure.
The closure is expected to last two weeks. Roads will be reopened as soon as the work is complete and it is safe to do so. We understand this is an inconvenience, but this closure represents the final step in completing the Walton Street Reconstruction Project.
To ensure safety, the following roads will also have impacts:
- John Street will become a two-way street during the closure.
- As part of the closure, John, Queen and Ontario Streets will become dead ends.
- Access from Brewery Lane to Cavan Street will be maintained, as it was during Phase 2 of the project.
Work Being Completed
- Raise maintenance holes and catch basins
- Complete curbing behind catch basins
- Mill the existing asphalt on the bridge deck and other locations
- Install the final lift of asphalt
- Complete line painting and traffic markings
- Take down all construction signage and general clean-up
Transit and Parking
Port Hope Transit Routes A and B will detour around the closure. A detour route will be publicized closer to the closure date. For transit information, visit our Transit webpage. To receive news about transit impacts right to your email inbox, subscribe to our Transit Alerts.
Parking is available at the Cavan Street lot, the Elias Street lots, the Library, Town Hall, and on-street parking surrounding Walton Street. Additional free parking will also be available at the lot located at 74 Queen Street (south of Town Hall).
Garbage
Garbage collection will not change. Please put your garbage out on the curb on your usual collection day by 7:00 a.m. and the construction crews will move the garbage to a designated location for pick up.
Additional notes
We recognize that portions of Walton Street have had closures over the last several construction seasons and we appreciate the community’s continued patience. This two-week closure will allow crews to complete all remaining work so the project can be finalized, with no further closures anticipated once this milestone is reached.
Prior to scheduling the closure, the Municipality consulted with Heritage Business Improvement Area (HBIA) Board and the members were supportive of moving forward with this closure in September to see the project completed as soon as possible.
While the closure is taking place, shops and services will be open for business. Sidewalks will be accessible and parking on adjacent streets and in nearby lots is encouraged.
