For Immediate Release
Thursday, July 16, 2026 – Port Hope, ON

The Municipality of Port Hope is reminding residents that smoke from numerous wildland fires burning across Ontario continues to affect local air quality, creating hazy conditions and increasing health risks for vulnerable individuals.

Ontario is currently experiencing approximately 180 active wildland fires, with smoke being carried across much of the province. While many of these fires are occurring far from Port Hope, changing weather patterns and prevailing winds continue to impact local air quality and visibility.

The Municipality is currently experiencing Orange (High Risk) Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) conditions, indicating that everyone should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities if they experience symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation. Individuals who are more vulnerable, including older adults, young children, pregnant people, and those with heart or lung conditions, should reduce or avoid prolonged outdoor exertion and limit exposure to smoky conditions whenever possible.

Limiting outdoor work for municipal staff

Due to poor air quality conditions, the Municipality has been closely monitoring air quality and taking steps to reduce employee exposure. Outdoor work has been limited where possible, with staff working outdoors only as tolerated, supported by lighter duties and longer relief periods. Alternate work assignments and adjusted shifts have also been implemented as needed to help protect employee health and safety.

Burn Ban implemented to reduce fire risk

In response to the elevated wildfire risk and deteriorating air quality, Fire Chief Jason Williams issued a municipal burn ban effective July 15, 2026.

The burn ban has been implemented to:

  • Reduce the risk of human-caused wildland fires within the Municipality of Port Hope;
  • Protect residents, property, and environmentally sensitive areas during elevated fire conditions;
  • Reduce demands on emergency response resources during a period of heightened wildfire activity across Ontario; and
  • Help minimize additional smoke entering the local environment while air quality remains poor.

Residents are reminded that all open-air burning is prohibited while the burn ban remains in effect. The Municipality appreciates the cooperation of the community in helping reduce wildfire risks during this period.

Prepared through proactive planning

Although the current smoke originates primarily from fires burning elsewhere in Ontario, the Municipality of Port Hope has taken significant steps to prepare for the increasing threat of wildland fires closer to home.

Earlier this year, Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services completed its Community Wildland Fire Management Plan, developed under the leadership of Fire Chief Jason Williams. The plan is one of the most comprehensive municipal wildfire preparedness strategies in Ontario and provides a proactive framework for wildfire prevention, emergency preparedness, response, mitigation, and community education.

The plan includes:

  • Comprehensive wildfire hazard and risk assessments;
  • Community mitigation strategies based on FireSmart principles;
  • Operational response planning and resource coordination;
  • Public education initiatives to improve wildfire awareness and preparedness;
  • Protection strategies for critical infrastructure and environmentally sensitive areas; and
  • Long-term recommendations to strengthen the Municipality's resilience to future wildland fire events.

"As wildfire seasons become longer and more severe across Canada, municipalities must be proactive rather than reactive," said Fire Chief Jason Williams. "Our Community Wildland Fire Management Plan ensures Port Hope is well prepared to respond to the growing challenges associated with wildland fires while continuing to protect our residents, firefighters, and natural environment."

Protecting your health during poor air quality

Residents are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions and take the following precautions while smoke persists:

  • Limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities whenever possible.
  • Keep windows and doors closed if indoor temperatures can be maintained safely.
  • Use air conditioning on recirculation mode where available.
  • Consider using a portable HEPA air purifier to improve indoor air quality.
  • Reduce additional indoor air pollution by avoiding smoking, burning candles, or using wood-burning appliances.
  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Check on family members, neighbours, and others who may be more vulnerable to smoke exposure.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe coughing, or worsening asthma or heart-related conditions.

The Municipality of Port Hope thanks residents for their continued cooperation in respecting the burn ban and taking precautions to protect themselves and the community during this period of elevated wildfire activity.
