The Municipality of Port Hope has adopted a new Municipal Wildland Fire Management Plan, marking a significant step forward in protecting the community from the growing risk of wildland fires.
Developed by Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services (PHFES) with funding support from Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund, the plan reflects a collaborative effort with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, and local emergency service partners.
Wildland and wildland-urban interface fires are an emerging concern across Ontario and Canada, driven by climate change, prolonged drought, more frequent extreme weather events, and ongoing development in forested and rural areas. With the 2026 wildfire season expected to bring heightened risk, the Municipality is taking proactive steps to strengthen its readiness and resilience.
“The completion of this plan strengthens our ability to respond to a changing climate and helps build a more resilient community,” stated Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “It reflects our commitment to protecting residents today and into the future.”
The Plan integrates with Port Hope’s broader emergency management framework and strengthens readiness, prevention, mitigation, and public education. It enhances risk mapping and response planning, identifies high-risk areas, and outlines strategies for vegetation management and fuel reduction, while aligning wildfire considerations with land use and infrastructure planning.
A key component of the plan is the introduction of the FireSmart Canada program in Port Hope. This initiative will focus on helping residents understand their role in reducing wildfire risk, providing practical guidance on protecting homes and properties, and encouraging community-wide participation. The Municipality will also explore the creation of a FireSmart Community Committee to support ongoing education and engagement.
The plan delivers wide-ranging benefits by improving public safety, preparedness, and wildfire risk reduction, while enhancing firefighter safety and emergency response capabilities. It also positions the Municipality as a leader in climate adaptation and ensures alignment with evolving provincial direction on risk assessment, hazard reduction, and shared responsibility in wildfire prevention.
